Methadone Treatment Brochure – Myths v. Realities
August 26, 2010

In response to recent attacks on methadone treatment it was clear that an education campaign was necessary. PCPA teamed up with the Pennsylvania Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence to develop a brochure outlining the myths and realities of methadone treatment. The brochure begins with the following statement:

“The benefits of methadone as a component of a comprehensive treatment program for opioid addiction have been validated by dozens of clinical studies and confirmed by numerous authorities in the addiction treatment field. Yet myths about methadone abound. The National Institute of Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health, the World Health Organization, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, among many others, strongly support methadone treatment.”

The brochure includes eight myths and realities and also includes six important fact about methadone treatment:

  • Saves lives
  • Reduces transmission of HIV (four-six fold reductions,) Hepatitis B and C and other infections
  • Eliminates or reduces illicit opioid use
  • Reduces criminal activity, and
  • Is cost effective.
