Services May Not be Provided “Incident To” LCSWs

March 10, 2004

In an Alert dated November 21, 2003 PCPA informed its members about the latest developments for “incident to.” On December 15 PCPA made members aware of a possible error in the Alert regarding the ability of services to be provided “incident to” a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW). After follow up discussions with Dr. Bloschichak, Medical Director of HGSAdministrators (HGSA), PCPA has learned that licensed clinical social workers may NOT have services provided “incident to” their services. LCSWs, however, can provide services “incident to” a psychiatrist or psychologist or may provide services directly to Medicare recipients if the LCSW has a valid PIN number with HGSA.

Dr. Bloschichak has tentatively agreed to attend the next Mental Health Committee meeting on March 16 in Harrisburg. PCPA members with questions are welcome to attend this meeting.

The Association apologizes for any inconvenience this has caused. Contact Rebecca May Cole with any questions or for information about the March Mental Health Committee meeting.
