State officials announced today that Mayview State Hospital, located in South Fayette near Pittsburgh, will close by December 2008. The inclusion of 200 Community Hospital Integration Projects Program (CHIPPs) slots in the 2007/08 approved state budget heightened anticipation about this possible closure.
More than 200 individuals currently reside at the hospital and most will move to community living. Individuals needing more intensive treatment and supervision will be transferred to Torrence State Hospital in Westmoreland County. However, county officials have reported that every effort will be made to support community living.
More than 500 employees work at Mayview and will be offered employment opportunities at other state facilities or community programs.
In addition, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette reported today the forensics unit at Mayview will also close. It was reported that the state plans to seek proposals for private companies to provide forensics services at Norristown Hospital and Torrance State Hospital.
A public hearing on the Mayview closure will be held September 10 from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. at the Crowne Plaza Pittsburgh South in Bethel Park. Contact Dorothy Owens at 412-257-6200 or dowens@state.pa.us.
More information will follow as it is received. In the meantime, PCPA members may direct questions to Betty Simmonds at PCPA.
