As described in the conference brochure, the 2005 legislative panel will cross over two workshop sessions on Thursday, October 6. Beginning at 9:00 a.m. a bi-partisan group of legislative staffers will avail themselves to workshop attendees for a question-and-answer session. At approximately 10:30 a.m., legislators will join the workshop to make brief presentations and do a question-and-answer session. The following are confirmed for attendance at the conference:
The Honorable Jake Corman
Senator Corman is the chair of the Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee. He is a Republican representing a district that includes Centre/Juniata/Mifflin/Perry/Union counties. Many pieces of PCPA-related legislation run through Corman’s committee. Due to a last-minute call to attend a leadership summit in Washington, DC last year Corman was unable to join the panel, however he was well-received in 2002.The Honorable Jay Costa, Jr.
Senator Costa represented the Democrats on last year’s panel and PCPA is pleased to have him return this year. Costa serves as Democratic Caucus Chairman as well as the minority chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee. PCPA is pleased to note that Costa is a prime sponsor, with Senator Patricia H. Vance, of Senate Bill 727 regarding dedicated funding for drug and alcohol treatment. Costa is a Democrat representing Allegheny County.Sharon Cole
Ms. Cole, a long-time staffer of the House Republican Caucus, moved within the past year to become part of the House Health and Human Services Committee staff. Cole covers mental health issues for the committee within her assignment purview. Earlier this summer, Cole spearheaded efforts with other committee staff to host a public hearing on co-occurring disorders.Ronald Jumper
Mr. Jumper works through the office of Senator Costa and serves as the Democratic counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Jumper is attending his first PCPA conference and will bring with him a wealth of knowledge that may be of particular interest to forensic providers.Mark Ryan
Mr. Ryan serves as chief of staff to Senator Vance. As Vance was elected to the Senate in November 2004, she is considered a "freshman" Senate member; however, she served prior in the House. Ryan, too, previously served in the House as the executive director of the Finance Committee. Ryan was instrumental in researching and writing Senate Bill 727 with Senators Vance and Costa. The following individuals have been invited to participate in the panels and hope to confirm soon:
