All physicians, laboratories, hospitals, and other entities that receive or provide results to clients in PA are now legally required to report by name, individuals who: (1) have had a positive test result established from any test approved by the Food and Drug Administration to establish the presence of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV); (2) have low CD4 T-lymphocyte cell counts; or (3) are pregnant women with positive HIV test results whose newborns have been perinatally exposed. The names of people with HIV infection will be reported to the Pennsylvania Department of Health or to local health departments in counties or municipalities. Individuals must still give written consent to be tested for HIV. (Thanks to Barbara Breen, RN, at the Office of Mental Retardation for sharing this information with PCPA.)
The Pennsylvania Department of Health's provider brochure gives additional information, or more information is available from the Department at 717-783-0481.
