Medicaid Listening Tour Testimony

November 8, 2005

George Kimes, PCPA executive director provided testimony at the Allentown session of the Department of Public Welfare (DPW) sponsored “Listening Tours.” The sessions were designed by DPW to encourage citizens to offer solutions to the crisis in Medicaid funding.

PCPA testimony focused on several cost saving areas including the need to undertake regulatory relief. Kimes cited the over 200 suggestions previously submitted to the department that would provide relief from burdensome and duplicative regulations. His testimony also highlighted the need to maximize funding for services in the Medical Assistance program by examining the costs of multiple levels of administration created in the HealthChoices program. The association offered suggestions for new funding to support drug and alcohol services through the PCPA supported initiatives for both a dedicated tax (the Johnstown flood tax) and an increase in the beer tax.

The association would like to thank members who took the time to testify at various sessions held across the state. Those efforts are appreciated. Some of the testimony provided at the sessions is available on the DPW web site, www.dpw.state.pa.us/General/MATour.
