MH/MR Coalition Collects Industry Statistics

May 2, 2003

The MH/MR Coalition needs to know how many people work in the mental health (MH) and mental retardation (MR) industry. The coalition has prepared a survey that asks questions about the number of budgeted positions, vacant positions, and anticipated layoffs due to the FY 2003-04 state budget.

Survey Purpose
The coalition has included economic development arguments as part of the work with legislative and administrative policy makers. The coalition needs more data to illustrate the issues. For example, if it can be shown that the industry has more employees than an employer such as WalMart or US Air, the coalition can approach policy makers and funders from a stronger industry perspective. This survey will enhance the information gathered two years ago.

Deadline
Survey results are needed by May 16.

Distribution
The County MH/MR programs will distribute the survey web site, as well as paper copies of the survey, to all mental health and mental retardation providers with whom they contract. This will reach a broader audience than can the coalition. If providers do not receive their surveys from their counties by May 8, they should contact PCPA.

Survey Method
The survey will be available electronically through Survey Monkey, a tool used by PCPA for other recent surveys. After data is collected, the survey itself takes just 5 minutes to complete. Providers who do not have access to the Internet will be able to use paper surveys and mail them to the MH/MR Coalition.

Confidentiality
Only aggregate information will be utilized and shared.
