OMHSAS Simplifies BHRS Process
July 20, 2010

The Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (OMHSAS) has issued a bulletin that changes the standard frequency of comprehensive evaluations for Behavioral Health Rehabilitation Services (BHRS), as well as the maximum length of the authorization period, from four months to six months.  This change takes effect August 1. In the case of Summer Therapeutic Activity Programs needed during the six month authorization period, an addendum rather than a complete evaluation may be used to request this service. This change does not affect the policy allowing for a 12-month BHRS service authorization for children and adolescents with behavioral health needs compounded by developmental disorders such as autistic disorder or other pervasive development disorder.

This bulletin is now available on the Department of Public Welfare web site.
