SAMHA Guide to Integrated Health Care for Children
September 11, 2013

Integrating Behavioral Health and Primary Care for Children and Youth: Concepts and Strategies is a new resource from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration and Health Resources Service Administration (SAMHSA-HRSA) Center for Integrated Health Solutions. This resource was developed in collaboration with the National Council for Behavioral Health, with the advice and input of staff and child-serving members of RCPA. This new guide provides robust information on:

  • Models of organizing service delivery for youth,
  • Five core competencies of integrated care systems for children with behavioral health problems, and
  • Financing mechanisms that support integrated care systems for children with behavioral health problems.

RCPA, like SAMHSA and the National Council, believes that integrated care systems  and organizations can have the greatest impact on the whole health of children, adolescents, and families in communities across Pennsylvania. This report is designed specifically for community behavioral health and health centers to support the development of their approach to care that comprehensively addresses primary care, specialty care, and social support needs of children and youth in a continuous and family-centered manner.

Recognizing that many providers and health care partners have implemented innovative approaches to providing integrated care for children and youth, the National Council is inviting providers to share those stories by sending an email description of their work in integrated physical and behavioral health to integration@thenationalcouncil.org.
