Support for D&A Services in School and Home
November 10, 2009

The Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (OMHSAS) has issued a policy clarification that opens the way for expanded community access to drug and alcohol (D&A) services for youth within the HealthChoices program. The recently released clarification indicates that counties and behavioral health managed care organizations may add substance abuse treatment services that are delivered in school and home settings as a supplemental service in HealthChoices. Community treatment providers, county leaders, and behavioral health managed care organizations have sought ways of improving access to D&A treatment services in communities. OMHSAS, working with the Office of Medical Assistance Programs, the Bureaus of Drug and Alcohol Programs, and the Division of D&A Licensing have made clear that the expanded delivery of D&A services to youth in school and home settings may now be considered and added to the local HealthChoices array of benefits.
