DPW Survey of Restraint Data Collection
February 2, 2007

The Department of Public Welfare (DPW) has sent all Chapter 3800-regulated providers an email notice of a brief survey related to data elements that many providers currently collect. The email from DPW includes the link to a web-based survey. The survey is to determine what data elements are being collected by providers so that a common set of elements can be used to measure the reduction of restraint statewide. Completion of this survey will assist DPW in determining the ability of providers to submit aggregate reports that will be used to measure statewide outcomes related to this initiative. The web-based survey must be completed by February 9.

Through Alternatives to Coercive Techniques (ACT) regional forums, providers and families have shared information to promote the positive approaches that have been effective in preventing and deescalating behavioral crisis and eliminating the unnecessary use of restraint. Data collection has been identified as an essential component in developing quality improvement protocols and was the focus of discussion at a recent ACT forum.
