Emergency Release of Student Information
July 8, 2010

The US Department of Education has released information on the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) to answer questions about the sharing of personally identifiable student information to outside parties when responding to health or safety emergencies and natural or man-made disasters. This information is to help schools understand how, what, and when information can be shared with outside parties as a critical part of the school’s emergency response and preparedness. Because community behavioral health providers are frequently involved in responding to student-related health/behavioral health emergency or local disaster, it is important that provider agencies and schools they serve be aware of this information. A copy of the FERPA Disclosure of Student Information Related to Emergencies and Disasters is available.
