Head Start Expansion Opportunity
February 22, 2005

The governor’s budget proposes an increase for Head Start Supplemental, which will permit a doubling of the program from a $15 million to a $30 million investment. This will create the opportunity for communities to expand this important program. The request for applications has been issued, and is available online at www.pde.state.pa.us/early_childhood/cwp/view.asp?a=179&Q=101699&early_childhoodNav=|6275|&early_childhoodNav.
The purpose of the Department of Education’s new Head Start Supplemental Assistance Program is to expand high quality pre-kindergarten Head Start services for eligible children throughout Pennsylvania. Head Start Programs will enroll additional three- and four-year-olds and expand full-day and full-year service opportunities for children and families.

The Department of Education is encouraging Head Start programs to partner with child care programs and schools to offer a robust, comprehensive approach to pre-kindergarten Head Start. Interested providers are urged to get in touch with their local Head Start grantee for further discussion. The deadline for submission of applications is April 15.
