Highmark Foundation Grants for Healthy Schools
August 27, 2013

Highmark Foundation has announced the invitation for grant applications focusing on creating a healthy school environment. One-year grants (2013/14 school year) will provide schools with funding and resources necessary to create healthier environments for students. This opportunity will provide schools (grades K-12) with mini-grants and school districts with “super+ school district” grants. The Highmark Foundation has made $500,000 available in Pennsylvania, with $250,000 available for mini-grants and $250,000 for the school district program. These grants enable schools to continue creating healthy school environments, actively engage leadership, integrate health and wellness into the school improvement plan, and effectively use data for continuous improvement.

The Highmark Foundation will award mini-grants for programs that address one of the following topics. Applicants may apply for funding in only one area:

  • Childhood Injury (Concussion screening using tools such as sports injury surveillance software, safety and injury prevention, helping youth develop sound decision-making skills to reduce injury; promote an environment of safety and injury reduction.)
  • Healthy Eating and Physical Activity (Improve children’s nutrition and physical activity in schools through healthier school foods and physical education classes that accommodate the health and nutrition needs of all students; make school‘s physical activity spaces available before and after school hours.)
  • Physical and Environmental Health (School-based asthma management; promote water consumption in schools as an alternative to sodas and sugar sweetened drinks and increased access to clean drinking water.)

Applications are being accepted until October 1. Awards will be announced November 1.
