Plan for Early Childhood Training Grant Application
August 11, 2010

The Request for Applications (RFA) for providers interested in the Heinz Endowments Grant to provide staff training in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) will be issued in the next several days. The Department of Public Welfare (DPW) will manage this project which will provide intensive training, on-going supervision, coaching, and support. DPW hopes to receive applications that will result in the creation of several regional centers for ongoing expansion of this promising clinical practice.  In year one of the grant, training will be provided to eight master's level clinicians in four licensed mental health agencies. During the second year, eight more clinicians will be trained. Those who are trained will then be able to train an additional clinician in their agency.

There will be a very short time available to consider and apply for participation in this grant. Some of the key dates for this process are:

  • Release of the RFA should occur this week,
  • The deadline for submission of an application for participation is September 10,
  • Agencies will be notified of application decisions on September 27, and
  • The grant begins with a week-long training on November 1.

Agencies can learn more about PCIT at www.pcit.org or http://pcit.phhp.ufl.edu. Interested agencies should consider how they will manage costs not included in the grant, including staff travel, technology requirements, and even architectural changes to support the PCIT model. The plan is for the RFA to include more detailed project cost commitment information as well as critical application requirements for collaboration between mental health and early childhood services in the community.
