School Behavioral Health Work Group Forming
June 6, 2011

For the past several years PCPA members have championed the development and growth of school based behavioral health services. In response, the Children’s Steering Committee created a work group to focus on school based behavioral health care. The work group will identify and cultivate service models and partnerships that will advance social and emotional wellness, mental health services, and substance use intervention services that will benefit students and support the work and mission of educators in the community.

The work group will also identify, inform, and address policy, planning, practice issues, opportunities, and barriers related to the provision of services that promote social and emotional wellness, mental health services, and substance use intervention services to and support the work and mission of educators in the community. Several of the recent issues identified for action by the work group include:

  • Models for effective school based behavioral health services;
  • Screening for depression and other behavioral health conditions;
  • Services for students with health, developmental, cognitive, and other conditions;
  • Interventions related to peer-to-peer abuse (e.g. bullying and cyber-bulling);
  • Confidentiality;
  • Act 62 related services in schools; and
  • Impact of behavioral health parity in school service delivery.
The work group’s core membership will be behavioral health and community education providers that are PCPA members. The work group may also include representatives of state and local government agencies engaged in education and behavioral health services and university staff engaged in research and training related to special education, student health, and behavioral health care. Members interested in participating should contact Connell O’Brien (connell@paproviders.org).
