Webinar: Prioritizing Suicide Prevention and Mental Health
March 12, 2014

The National Technical Assistance Center for Children's Mental Health conducts monthly webinars. The March 20 topic is: Prioritizing Suicide Prevention and Mental Health in Medical, Educational, and Child Welfare Settings.

A growing national conversation focuses on screening for mental illness and behavioral distress in routine clinical settings such as primary care, emergency rooms, schools, and child welfare. These systems work with many youth facing challenges, but may not have consistent and reliable procedures to help identify, assess, and refer them to services. Challenges and barriers to screening in these settings occur at the patient, provider, and systems level, but solutions are emerging. This webinar will enumerate these challenges and provide examples of how specific behavioral health screening instruments and processes can be incorporated into routine work flow. As a case study, the development and implementation of the Behavioral Health Screen (BHS), a validated, web-based instrument that covers a range of behavioral health domains will be presented. After reviewing this tool, three clinicians will share front line experiences with the BHS in clinical settings followed by open discussion.

The webinar is March 20, 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. Registration and additional information is available. Presenters include health and behavioral health care leaders from Pennsylvania and national experts in the field of pediatrics and mental health care. The webinar will be facilitated by Sherry Peters, MSW, ACSW of the National Technical Assistance Center for Children's Mental Health at the Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development.
