June 9, 2014

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA) has published a Treatment Improvement Protocol TIP 58: Addressing Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), available at no charge from the SAMHSA web site. This is the first entry in the long-standing TIP series to address FASD directly. The publication provides strategies and recommendations for expanding FASD prevention and treatment efforts across behavioral health settings. The content was developed and reviewed by substance abuse and mental health FASD experts from across the country including local experts Mary C. DeJoseph, DO, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Donna N. McNelis, PhD, Drexel University College of Medicine. TIP 58 provides guidance for program administrators and a variety of checklists and tools to assist service implementation and delivery. It is divided into three parts:

  • Addressing Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, Part 1: Background and Clinical Strategies for FASD Prevention and Intervention;
  • Addressing Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, Part 2: Administrator’s Guide to Implementing FASD Prevention and Intervention; and
  • Addressing Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, Part 3: Literature Review.
