ARRA Funds National Health Services Corp Loan Repayment Program
April 7, 2009

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) includes almost $200 million for new applications and renewals for the National Health Services Corps (NHSC) Loan Repayment Program. According to the National Council, the additional funds could potentially double the number of clinicians receiving NHSC loan repayment by adding 4,000 clinicians for underserved areas. An additional $75 million is directed to renewals in 2011. Applications should be available in April and will be evaluated throughout the year. Eligible behavioral health services providers include psychiatrists, health service psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, psychiatric nurse specialists, marriage and family therapists, and licensed professional counselors. Eligible primary care providers include nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and primary care physicians in family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics-gynecology, and psychiatry. Final information and applications are not yet available. Those interested are encouraged to check the NHSC Loan Repayment Program web site (http://nhsc.hrsa.gov/index.asp) frequently to view the information as it becomes available. Questions may also be addressed to the NHSC Helpline (800-221-9393) between 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. or email callcenter@hrsa.gov.
