Proposed Regulations for Nurse Practitioners
December 4, 2008

The Pennsylvania Board of Nursing has proposed new regulations pertaining to the practice of certified registered nurse practitioners (CRNPs). The proposed regulations are available on the Independent Regulatory Review Commission (IRRC) web site (http://www.irrc.state.pa.us/Regulations/RegInfo.cfm?IRRCNo=2729). PCPA has an interest in these regulations because many members utilize CRNPs to great effect. The Mental Health Committee has reviewed the content of the regulations and has recommended PCPA support them.  The committee noted a number of areas in the proposed regulations that would be particularly helpful to PCPA members.  The association’s comment letter is available. PCPA members are encouraged to submit a comment letter to:

Ann Steffanic
Board Administrator
State Board of Nursing
PO Box 2649
Harrisburg, PA 17105-2649

Comments are due on December 8. PCPA will hand deliver member comments that arrive at PCPA by email or fax by 3:00 p.m. on December 8. PCPA applauds this proposed expansion of the scope of services permitted CRNPs and encourages the Department of Public Welfare and the Office of Medical Assistance Programs to update requirements to allow CRNPs to practice to the full extent of their scope of practice within behavioral health programs. Further questions may be directed to Betty Simmonds.
