Joan Erney New CEO of CBH

Philadelphia Commissioner Dr. Arthur Evans announced that Joan Erney, JD, has been appointed chief executive officer (CEO) of Community Behavioral Health (CBH). Ms. Erney has served as director, Office of Policy, Planning and Innovation at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Prior to that she monitored implementation of health care reform initiatives for Community Care Behavioral Health. She was deputy secretary for the Pennsylvania Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services for seven years, overseeing closure of three state hospitals and development of community behavioral health services and supports. She championed development of peer supports and other services steeped in recovery and resiliency principles. Under Erney’s leadership, HealthChoices expanded to increase access to mental health and substance use services across Pennsylvania. Erney will begin with CBH January 22, 2013. She will work closely with Nancy Lucas, current CBH CEO who will retire in February.

PCPA welcomes Ms. Erney back to Pennsylvania and looks forward to working together to continue to improve behavioral health services and supports. PCPA also acknowledges the strong leadership of Ms. Nancy Lucas and wishes her well in her retirement.
