OMHSAS Deputy Secretary Announced
April 14, 2003

During an April 14 executive staff meeting of the Department of Public Welfare, Joan Erney was announced as the Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (OMHSAS) Deputy Secretary. Ms. Erney, who has a long and positive history of working with PCPA and the provider community, has most recently served as the director of the OMHSAS Bureau of Operations and Quality Management, which oversees the HealthChoices program statewide.

Long involved in the Pennsylvania system, Ms. Erney helped found the Community Behavioral Healthcare Network of PA and later served as Chief Executive Officer. Ms. Erney also spent many years as a Senior Policy Specialist at PCPA.

"We are thrilled to work with Ms. Erney in this capacity. She has shown herself to be a strong advocate for consumers and families, and has demonstrated her commitment to working with the provider system in creating and sustaining a strong mental health and substance abuse system," said George Kimes, executive director of PCPA when he learned of her appointment. Kimes also emphasized Ms. Erney's strong commitment to improving services for children as another strength. "We at PCPA congratulate Ms. Erney in her new position and look forward to continuing to work with her in the future."

Deputy Secretary Erney will be meeting with PCPA's Executive Committee on Wednesday, April 16.
