Medicare Recovery Audit Contractor Calls
April 1, 2009

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has scheduled Special Open Door Forums (ODF) for providers on Medicare Part A and Part B Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) Programs. The ODF calls are to introduce providers to the new contractors and provide information about the RAC program. The program will be operational in all states by January 1, 2010. Each RAC will identify over- and under-payments in their contracted areas and return money to the Medicare Trust Fund and providers. The RACs are paid on a contingency basis for all accurately identified overpayments. The program is slated to begin in Pennsylvania in August.

In 2008 CMS announced RAC contractors, but there was a challenge to the selection which was recently resolved. RAC contractors are:

  • Region A: Diversified Collection Services (Northeast, including Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey);
  • Region B: CGI Technologies and Solutions (Midwest, including Kentucky, Minnesota, Illinois, and Ohio);
  • Region C: Connolly Consulting Associates (South, including Florida, Virginia, West Virginia, Colorado, and New Mexico); and
  • Region D:  HealthDataInsights (West, including Arizona, Missouri, Iowa, Alaska, and Hawaii).

The RACs will contract with subcontractors to supplement their work. PRG-Schultz has subcontracted for services in Regions A, B, and D. Viant Payment Systems will subcontract in Region C.

A Special ODF conference call for Medicare Part A providers is April 8 from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. To participate, dial 800-837-1935 and use conference identification 92490299. CMS indicates that capacity is limited and callers may begin connecting by 1:45 p.m. An audio recording and transcript of the forum will be available for 30 days beginning April 16 at www.cms.hhs.gov/OpenDoorForums/05_ODF_SpecialODF.asp.

An Open Door Forum for Medicare Part B providers is April 14 from 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. Dial 800-837-1935 with conference identifier 92489480 to participate. Callers can begin to connect at 1:45 p.m. An audio recording will be available from the web site beginning April 22 and be available for 30 days.
