Medicare Update
June 4, 2010

Physician Fee Schedule Update
The zero percent update to the 2010 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) ended May 31. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) directed Medicare Administrative Contractors to hold claims for services paid through the MPFS for the first ten business days in June. Affected claims are those provided June 1 and later.

Medicare Signature Requirements
In April CMS implemented MLN Matters MM6698, Signature Guidelines for Medical Review Purposes. The article outlines requirements for signatures of physicians, non-physician practitioners, suppliers, and for e-prescribing. It describes expectations for Medicare review of claims and documentation. A handwritten signature is defined as a mark or sign by an individual on a document to signify knowledge, approval, acceptance, or obligation.   For medical review, if requirements do not specify that a signature must be dated, there must be sufficient information in the documentation to determine the date on which the service was performed or ordered. Reviewers will accept orders for Part B drugs other than controlled substances ordered through a qualified e-prescribing system; a system that meets requirements of 42 CFR 423.160. Highmark Medicare Services will present a webinar on signature requirements June 7. Registration information and the webinar handout are available at https://www.highmarkmedicareservices.com/calendar/partb/webinar/index.html.
