Governor Names New Secretary of Education

Governor Rendell has named Dr. Francis V. Barnes as the new Pennsylvania Secretary of Education. The 55-year-old Barnes has compiled an impressive education resume in Pennsylvania, currently serving as superintendent of the Palisades School District in Kintnersville, PA in Northern Bucks County. Prior to that Barnes was superintendent in the Huntingdon Area School District and the Hopewell Area School District in the Central Pennsylvania and Pittsburgh areas. respectively.

Barnes main geographic area of service is in the Pittsburgh area. Prior to the Hopewell School District, Barnes previously served as principal, dean of students, and other roles in the North Allegheny School District and Allegheny Middle School. After receiving his bachelor's degree at Slippery Rock University, Secretary-Elect Barnes went on to achieve his Master's degree in education, and doctorate in philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh.

Pending confirmation by the Pennsylvania Senate, Barnes will succeed Secretary of Education Vicki Phillips who announced her resignation of the cabinet post in April to take a superintendent's job in Portland, Oregon.
