DPW Name Change Bill Headed for Senate Vote
June 26, 2013

Legislation to change the name of the Department of Public Welfare (DPW) to the Department of Human Services has gained traction in the Senate, where Senate Bill 840 (Mensch) was voted out of the Health and Welfare Committee and will be addressed by the full Senate.  SB 840 is cosponsored by 39 of 50 senators, including leaders of both caucuses. Once SB 840 passes it will need approval by the House before going to the governor for signature. The passage of SB 840 will result in the department’s name more accurately reflecting its current mission and help to eliminated stigma. SB 840 is identical to House Bill 993 (Murt), which also had a wide range of bi-partisan support, with 109 co-sponsors, but was not scheduled for a House vote.
