Supportive Housing and “Speaking Landlord” Presentation
April 28, 2010

This information regarding the April 30, 12:00 – 1:30 p.m., Lunch and Learn Session was provided by the Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services:

The subject of housing for persons with mental health challenges is a serious discussion throughout Pennsylvania.  People with mental health challenges define safe, affordable housing as critical in supporting recovery.  In addition, adequate housing options/opportunities is one of the most pressing needs identified by county mental health offices. Finding a person an affordable apartment, although a difficult task, is really only half the battle.  If the landlord can’t ‘be sold’ on the supporting program and the person, then attempts to partner to establish rentals increase in difficulty.

“Speaking Landlord” is designed for case managers, family service personnel, and anyone who assists people in recovery to search for an affordable apartment to learn the language of the landlord and better communicate the advantages of supportive housing. By the end of the workshop, participants will understand the language of landlords and what they want, distinguish information needed to access supportive housing for a person and when too much information is being revealed, and practice communicating with a landlord using “if he says, then you say” case scenarios.

The session will be presented by Jeff Sattler, whose experience includes 27+ years in both for-profit and non-profit housing, real estate and property management, and real estate-related business.  He is the behavioral health housing specialist for Bucks County. Sattler has vast experience with HUD programs and guidelines, asset and property management, leasing, fiscal and operational oversight, budgeting, staff supervision and review, event planning, public speaking and presentations. In addition, he is experienced in all forms of commercial and residential real estate, including landlord-tenant law, appraisals, new and existing home real estate sales, foreclosures, auctions and the acquisition, rehabilitation and disbursement of distressed property.
