HealthChoices Capital-Lehigh Delayed
February 4, 1999

HealthChoices, the state's Medicaid managed care initiative, will likely be postponed in the Capital-Lehigh Region. Department of Public Welfare Secretary Feather Houstoun announced on February 2 that implementation would likely not begin before July 1, 2001. This new date is a full year later than originally proposed.

Secretary Houstoun noted that the Department of Public Welfare is exploring several alternatives to the managed care model for physical health, and that HealthChoices might appear as a very different program in the Capital-Lehigh Region. There were no indications that the behavioral healthcare portion might be structured differently. Additionally, it was noted that behavioral health and physical health services would begin simultaneously in the region.
