Clarification Provided on CRNP Letter
January 27, 2003

PCPA has followed up on questions regarding the impact of the Office of Medical Assistance Programs (OMAP) letter discussing the reimbursement of prescription services by certified registered nurse practitioners (CRNPs). PCPA's Info dated January 14 provided information about this letter, along with a link to the letter and CRNP regulations.

After discussions with OMAP officials, PCPA has two items of clarification.

  1. Managed Care Organizations in HealthChoices have the ability to reimburse for the prescription services of CRNPs, however they are not required to do so. Members in HealthChoices areas are encouraged to contact their MCOs to learn if they will reimburse for these services.
  2. The intent of the OMAP letter identified above was to request CRNPs to submit certain information that will enable OMAP to reimburse for these services. At this time, however, OMAP is not able to reimburse for CRNP prescription services. The Office will release a bulletin in the near future indicating when these services may be provided and billed. PCPA will inform members as soon as the bulletin is released.
