DPW NPI Registration Reminder Letter
December 3, 2007

The Department of Public Welfare (DPW) is mailing a letter to all providers that have registered a National Provider Identifier (NPI) for at least one service location, but have other active service locations that have not been registered. The letter will list the service locations that do not have an NPI registered and request providers to review the list and either close service locations that are inactive or register their NPI with DPW for the service location(s). DPW estimates that approximately 10,000 letters will be sent.

As stated in the advance copy that PCPA received, Medical Assistance providers must register the NPI number with DPW at each PROMISe service location that is actively enrolled. Failure to register the NPI may result in claim denials or service location closures. The letter encourages closure of service locations that are not being used, but reminds providers to check with billing staff to ensure that the service location is inactive. Questions regarding NPI can be addressed to a DPW provider enrollment representative by calling 800-537-8862 and selecting option 1. Additional information about NPI can be found on the DPW web site (www.dpw.state.pa.us/PartnersProviders/MedicalAssistance/DoingBusiness/NPIinfo).
