October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month
October 4, 2011

President Obama has issued a proclamation for October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This provides an opportunity for recognition of the skills and talents that persons with disabilities can bring to the country’s workforce. A copy of the President’s proclamation is available.

In the past year the federal government has undertaken an initiative to improve employment opportunities for these individuals by promoting education and training. The President’s Executive Order #13548 in July 2010 marked the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. This directive called on federal agencies to increase the recruitment, hiring, and retention of persons with disabilities. To assist agencies in implementing the executive order, the US Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy developed an online toolkit. This five-step process includes employer training, creating a welcoming environment, recruitment, hiring, and retention. It is available at www.dol.gov/odep/federal-hire.
