HCSIS Bits Update
May 6, 2002

The following information is compiled from the office of Mental Retardation's (OMR) HCSIS Bits.

Recommendations to Improve HCSIS Performance

Since HCSIS is an Internet application, system performance is significantly impacted by the speed of the Internet connection that is used to connect to the application. For this reason, OMR recommends that users connect to HCSIS through the highest speed Internet connection that they can obtain. For optimal system performance, the following two alternatives are recommended, in order of expected performance: 1) High Speed Line (T1, DSL or Cable Modem) 2) High Speed Modem (128 Kbps). If providers experience any unusual delays in system performance, they are asked to contact the HCSIS Help Desk at 866-444-1264. The optimal response time of the HCSIS system should be about five seconds (PCPA note: Remember when we were told that using HSCSIS just meant buying a $300 computer and connecting to the Internet?)

Search Criteria in Incident Management

If a consumer's demographics cannot be located on HCSIS for Incident Management, a search should be done by "last name only" before a temporary demographic file is created. Temporary demographics for consumers can create delays in the Incident Management process. It is important to make every possible attempt to locate individuals in the system before creating a temporary demographic file. Entering multiple search criteria can locate an individual more quickly, but it also narrows the search and may prevent locating a particular consumer.

Learning Management Update

Certified Investigator Applicants can now self-register in the Learning Management System (LMS). People registering for the Certified Investigator Course who do not currently have a user ID and password for the LMS, may go to the LMS homepage at www.humanservices-r.state.pa.us/HCSISLMS. Scroll to the bottom of the homepage to locate the link to self-registration. Clicking on the link takes the user to a form that contains instructions for self-registration. Please note this form is only to be used by Certified Investigator Applicants who do NOT currently have an LMS user ID and password. Those who already have a LMS user ID and password, also have the ability to enroll in the Pennsylvania Certified Investigator course. To register for HCSIS training for the first time and to obtain LMS user ID and password, please contact your local HCSIS Administrator. The Administrator will then call the HCSIS Help Desk to establish an LMS ID. Thank You!
