IDD/SCO Updates – Week of March 4, 2013

Governor Corbett has issued a Proclamation for March as Brain Injury Awareness Month.

The Office of Developmental Programs’ (ODP) Dual Diagnosis Project is offering a five-day “Intensive Systems Therapy” training at Ebensburg Center, March 27 and 28, April 16 and 17, and May 14. Intensive systems therapy is used for individuals with intellectual and development disabilities with mental health issues who have extreme challenges in their behavior and thinking. For details contact Andrew Gonos (agonos@pa.gov). These trainings will also be offered in the near future in eastern region.

IDD Update – March 4, 2013
March is recognized nationally as Intellectual Disability Awareness Month. Governor Corbett has issued a proclamation in recognition of the contributions of individuals with intellectual disability. Office of Developmental Programs (OD)P Deputy Secretary Lokuta has also sent a message in recognition of citizens with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  

Fiscal Director Deb Donahue provided an overview of ODPs 2013/14 budget. Highlights include:

  • State funding increase of $128 million;
  • $18.5 million for home and community-based services (HCBS) for 1,080 individuals, including 380 on the waiting list and 700 students graduating from school; and
  • $1.5 million for HCBS for 118 adults with autism currently waiting for services.

ODP Employment Initiatives

  • A survey distributed as part of work with the State Employment Leadership Network (SELN) needs input by March 8.
  • The SELN Project Team is hosting focus groups across the state in mid-March open to supports coordination organizations, administrative entities, provider agencies, families, advocates, and self-advocates. Temple University’s Institute on Disabilities is sponsoring a pubic reading on March 18 to bring the story of Pennsylvania’s Intellectual Disability Movement to a wider audience. The interactive live broadcast will be available at the University of Pittsburgh and Temple University Harrisburg as well as other satellite locations.  Information is available at www.disabilities.temple.edu/voices/performs/.

  • Announcement #017-13: DPW Medication Administration Program, New Training Approach Combining Online and Classroom Training. New model to teach medication administration to staff in licensed programs.
  • Announcement #018-13: Medication Administration Program: Seeks Volunteers to Pilot New Training Approach (as detailed in #017-13).
  • Announcement #019-13: Submission Deadline for Audited Financial Statements is Approaching. Certain providers that need to submit their audited financial statements within nine months of the close of the provider’s account period. If that closure date is June 30, the AFS is due no later than March 31.
  • Informational Packet #020-13: ISP Review Checklist (Replaces AE ISP Checklist) Waiver Service Requirements, Criteria, and Guidelines.
  • Announcement #021-13: ISP Review Checklist Course Now Available: 2013 SC and AE Required Training.

Bureau of Human Services Licensing announces the Health Facility Diversion Training Conference April 10-11, Pennsylvania Child Welfare Training Center, Mechanicsburg. Prepared and presented by law enforcement, this training teaches individuals who deal with health care, regulations, and/or investigations how to properly handle situations when medications are missing, stolen, or otherwise diverted in a health care setting. SCO Update – March 4, 2013
The PARF/PCPA joint conference is October 8-11 at Seven Springs Mountain Resort. PCPA is looking for presenters on topics specific to the needs of Supports Coordination Organizations. Members that have a specific topic and want to present or can provide the name of a presenter should notify Linda Drummons by March 8. Details on submitting presentation proposals is available.

At the March 19 SCO Subcommittee meeting discussion regarding ISP revisions and recommendations is planned.  Please share recommendations in advance with Linda Drummond (linda@paproviders.org) so that a discussion list can be prepared.
