Temple Mini-Series on Disabilities
RCPA is a co-sponsors of the Temple University Institute on Disabilities’ Mini-course Lecture Services on Disabilities. Quality Lives and Community Living Outcomes are being presented by Dr. Amy Hewitt, director, University of Minnesota Research and Training Center. Sessions are being offered free on May 12 at Temple University, Philadelphia and May 13 at Rodef Shalom, Pittsburgh.

ODP Bulletin
The Office of Developmental Programs (ODP) released Bulletin #00-14-04: Accessibility of Intellectual Disability Services for Individuals Who Are Deaf. The bulletin clarifies requirements to provide communication assistance to individuals who are deaf, criteria to be utilized to determine if an individual is deaf, and types of communication assistance to facilitate communication for these individuals.

Rhode Island Settlement
On April 8, the US Department of Justice and Rhode Island announced agreement regarding unnecessary segregation of individuals with disabilities in sheltered workshops and facility-based day programs. It was determined that the state’s day activity service system relied on segregated settings to the exclusion of integrated options.

Criminal Behavior ID/DD
The Northwestern Health Care Quality Unit is offering training May 5 at Butler County Community College – Criminal Acts: Understanding and Helping Persons with Developmental Disabilities Who Commit Criminal Acts.

ODP Update
The Office of Developmental Programs (ODP) has scheduled two calls regarding the proposed FY 2014/15 budget.

April is National Autism Awareness Month
US Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius issued a press release regarding the recognition of persons with autism and the importance of early identification and supports and services.

State Michael Stack introduced Senate Resolution 337 recognizing April as Autism Awareness Month in Pennsylvania.

White House Disability Update
Claudia Gordon, White House associate director, Office of Public Engagement, is leaving this position. She has worked on disability issues within the administration and as a disabilities’ advocate.
