IDD Update

PCPA is a member of the national organization, ANCOR, which is sponsoring National Direct Support Professional Recognition Week beginning September 11. PCPA has requested from Governor Corbett a state proclamation recognizing direct support professionals.  Members will be sent resources, sample proclamations, and media outreach information to assist in local efforts to recognize the direct support workforce. Member agencies planning special events to recognize workers are asked to notify Linda Drummond (linda@paproviders.org) so it can be included in the PCPA newsletter.

ANCOR is also sponsoring a webinar, Technology Tools for a 21st Century Workforce, on August 8 at 1:00 p.m. The webinar will provide an overview of how one agency successfully incorporated contemporary technology into its operations and how the lives of those supported are being enhanced. Registration and costs are available at www.ancor.org.

President Obama issued a proclamation recognizing July 26 as the 21st Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. In conjunction. the US Department of Labor announced its new and improved web site, www.dol.gov/odep. This web site provides information for employers, individuals, educators, and service providers regarding information on "Good Jobs for Everyone" which includes people with disabilities.

Another resource for public and private employers is the Employer Resource Guide available at www.disability.gov/employment/employer_resources/hr_tools_%26_resources. It has information about laws that prohibit employment discrimination, job accommodations, tax incentives, and where to find qualified job candidates with disabilities.

ODP's Bureau of Autism Services is offering free webcasts on August 24 at 1:00 p.m.  and  August 30 at 10:00 a.m. The sessions will provide a general initiatives overview of the bureau's activities including reports about the autism needs assessment, barriers to accessing services, employment challenges, and family impact.   • Announcement #097-11: Response Due Date Extension. Shared living services request for information response date extended until September 8.
  • Informational Packet #098-11: Medication Administration Brochures. Brochures for new and recertifying medications administration trainers for 2011/12 are now available.
  • Announcement #099-11: Commonwealth Email Domain Change. Effective July 29 all commonwealth employees email addresses will have a new email domain, instead of the (surname)@state.pa.us it will be (surname)@pa.gov.
  • Announcement #100-11: Update to State Center Course Catalog.
  • Announcement #101-11: SCO Monitoring Tool for the Self Reporting Phase Available August 1. On August 1 Supports Coordination Organizations (SCOs) will receive two emails regarding the monitoring tool and the methods available to access the tool. A separate communication will be released in the near future announcing the availability of the Direct Service Provider Monitoring Tool for the self reporting phase.
  • MIG Fall Mini-grant. Requests for proposals will be accepted until August 31 for contractors for the Medicaid Infrastructure Grant Promoting Employment for Persons with Disabilities. The grant is for up to $3,000 for the period October 1 - December 31. Details are available from Diane Cashman, MIG project Officer (dcashman@pa.gov).
