MR Providers May be Impacted by Extended HIPAA Deadline
September 3, 2003

Mel Knowlton of the Office of Mental Retardation (OMR) informed PCPA that the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare (DPW) decided this week to accept the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) offer to extend the mandatory deadline for the use of nationally recognized codes and formats to transmit electronic healthcare transactions under HIPAA.

This decision allows counties to decide if they will go forward with the original October 16 deadline found in the recent OMR bulletin, Procedures Codes for Electronic Transfers of Health Care Services, or if they will extend their county deadline to December 31. DPW will accept either date.

If providers are unaware of their county MH/MR programs’ plans, they should immediately contact them. The MH/MR Administrators Association also emailed this information to counties today. The Office of Mental Retardation will issue a bulletin as soon as possible to further clarify the change in the deadline.

PCPA sent an Alert on August 25 with a copy of the procedures codes bulletin. Both are available from the links noted. The bulletin can also be obtained from Abbie Hitz. For information about the bulletin’s contents, please contact Mel Knowlton, OMR, 717-783-5764.
