October 2, 2013

President Obama has issued a Presidential proclamation recognizing October as “National Disability Employment Awareness Month 2013”.The proclamation “urges all Americans to embrace the talents and skills that individuals with disabilities bring to the workplaces, communities and to promote the right to equal employment opportunity for all people.”

The US Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy has developed a variety of resources to assist in recognition of this awareness effort with the 2013 theme of “Because We Are EQUAL to the Task.” Resources include posters, a sample proclamation, a sample press release, and sample social media content.

Pennsylvania Representative Thomas Murt has introduced House Resolution 473 designating October as “Disability History Awareness Month.” This resolution recognizes the history of disability legislation and milestones in the disability rights movements to ensure including of those with disabilities in their communities. This is an effort to increase awareness of the accomplishments and contributions these individuals have made.
