At the June 17 PCPA MR Committee meeting, members discussed numerous topics with Office of Mental Retardation (OMR) Deputy Secretary Kevin Casey. Supports Coordination (SC) concerns were aired, both from the perspective of SC units or agencies and of providers who work with the support coordinators.

Casey requested that two to four Support Coordinator names be sent to his office for participation in the current OMR Planning Advisory Committee (PAC) planning process. The four primary focus areas being explored are: Supports Coordination, the Waiting List, Recruitment and Retention, and Self-Determination. The PAC members split into these areas, to work in the subject area groups, then re-convene to share discussions. OMR hopes to get ideas from this process that will assist them in planning for Fiscal Year 2004-05.

The next PAC Retreat dates are July 7 and 8, followed by a “regular” PAC meeting on July 21. At this time, Support Coordinators who volunteer for this important opportunity to provide input will be committing to attendance on these three days at the Harrisburg Hilton and Towers in downtown Harrisburg. There are probably block room rates for those who must stay overnight.

PCPA members should submit names of Support Coordinators, or their immediate supervisors (preferably people who have previously done the SC job) to Lynn Keltz. If the Association receives more than four names, it will try to get diversity from around the state in those persons selected, as requested by Casey.

Please note that Mr. Casey would also like to find Direct Support Professionals who could become permanent PAC members. Ms. Keltz will accept nominations for this opportunity too.
