From PCHC:

2020 was a difficult year for many of us. However, one of the positive things to emerge from 2020 has been an increase in pet adoptions. Loneliness and isolation have impacted many as restrictions on socialization have tightened due to COVID-19. People and animals exist in what is considered a symbiotic relationship, where each derives benefit from the relationship with the other. One example is dog walking, which encourages people to seek increased opportunities for exercise and outdoor activities. This may offer both emotional and physical benefits in both humans and dogs. It is important to remember that emotional well-being leads to physical well-being and vice versa.

Emotionally, the benefits of pet ownership may include:

  • Reduction in stress, anxiety and depression
  • Reduction in feelings of loneliness.
  • Encourage playfulness

Physically, some of the benefits of pet ownership may include:

  • Decreased heart rate
  • Decreased blood pressure.
  • Decreased cholesterol levels
  • Decreased triglyceride levels
  • Increased immunity

Remember, pet ownership is not for everyone, but many people find an increase in physical and mental well-being through pet ownership.
